Proper Selection of Grilles, Registers, and Diffusers
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the effects of register and grille selection on room airflow patterns.
- Identify the characteristics and applications of various grilles, registers, and diffusers.
- Properly use and apply information contained in manufacturers grille and register engineering data.
- Properly determine the size and style of supply registers and return grilles for the needed application.

This webinar provides the knowledge and skills needed to properly select registers, grilles and diffusers. You will be introduced to the importance of proper supply register selection on the dynamics of air mixing and room airflow.
The age-old debate of whether supply airflow or return airflow affects room comfort more will be examined as the characteristics of various grilles, registers and diffusers are discussed in detail. Face velocity, terminal velocity, throw, spread, degree of deflection, noise criteria, effective area, and free area will all be defined. The impact these properties have on the airflow performance of a register, grille, or diffuser will also be explained.
Proper sizing techniques and interpretation of manufacturer’s engineering data will be covered to aid in proper grille, register, and diffuser selection. Participants will learn practical application of this data to improve the performance of forced-air HVAC systems. This ability will allow access to hidden opportunity to HVAC professionals for added sales and the ability to provide additional solutions that most will overlook.
