Construction Quality and Safety: Reducing Rework While Achieving Zero Incidents and Accidents

Good management usually extends to many parts of a construction project, and the link between craft worker safety and quality construction is strong and gradually being confirmed in academic studies. What approaches are the most promising that address both quality and safety? What are contractors doing that helps them decrease their rate of re-work as well as their safety-related incidents? What are the possible pitfalls of linking these two complicated aspects of construction?
ENR's panel of experts will discuss the way successes in management blend the typical goals of quality management, such as compliance with design and meeting customer expectations, with the reduction and elimination of accidents and near-misses.
John Gambatese is a Professor in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University and the Oregon Electric Group Faculty Fellow. Dr. Gambatese’s educational background includes Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley with emphases in structural engineering, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington in the area of construction engineering and management. He has worked in industry as a structural engineer for Degenkolb Associates, a private structural engineering consulting firm headquartered in San Francisco, and as a project engineer for the construction management firm of O’Brien-Kreitzberg & Associates in Seattle. He started his current position at Oregon State University in 2000 following three years on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and one year as an Acting Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. Dr. Gambatese has taught courses on construction contracts and specifications, construction safety, productivity, planning and scheduling, structural analysis and design, temporary construction structures, construction site operations, and engineering economics. He has performed research and published numerous articles on construction worker safety, sustainability, constructability, innovation, construction contracting, and life cycle properties of civil engineering facilities. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in California.
Moritz Schmid, Superintendent, Consigli Construction Company, Inc. After graduating from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2012 with a degree in civil engineering, Mr. Schmid started with Consigli Construction Company, Inc. as a field engineer. After working on the 200,000 square foot world headquarters for Biogen Idec in Cambridge, he was promoted to Superintendent in May 2014. In this role, Mr. Schmid is the full time, on-site representative for all field operations. He implements the project-specific safety and quality control programs and is responsible for the scheduling and management of all subcontractors. Mr. Schmid conducts weekly subcontractor meetings to reinforce the schedule milestones, quality goals and safety requirements of each trade. Recently, he managed the demolition and fit-out of a large, multi-tenant, life sciences building for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Investment Management Company. He has also worked on projects at Holy Cross College in Worcester and Williams College in Western Massachusetts. Aside from his degree at Wentworth, Mr. Schmid holds three separate certifications with OSHA and a Construction Supervisor’s License.
Bennett Ghormley, Sr. Co-Founder, Zero Industry Institute. Mr. Ghormley has a BS Degree from Texas A&M University and over 35 years of experience in safety, training and construction administration. He is experienced in implementing safety programs involving commercial, industrial and municipal industries. He has conducted audits, investigations and inspections in refineries, chemical and petrochemical plants, for pipelines, water and waste facilities, manufacturing plants and fabrication facilities. Also he has served as an expert witness in litigation cases and appeared before the Workers’ Compensation Commission, EEOC, Employment Commission and civil courts.
